Start with the DOC ID and sentencing locality whenever both are known. They connect the custody, court, and release records.
Wise Unit Notification Handoff
VADOC’s NAAVI notification system is separate from local Virginia Jail VINE. A prior SWVRJA registration does not automatically continue when a person enters state custody. Eligible users must follow VADOC’s state process for transfer, advance release, release date, escape, recapture, parole interview, and parole decision notices. An alert remains a prompt to confirm the event with VADOC, not a substitute for signed release papers or the destination field.
Wise Correctional Unit Release Paths
Wise Correctional Unit is operated by VADOC in Coeburn. A person leaving it may complete a sentence through discharge, enter parole or probation in the community, transfer to another VADOC institution, move to a hospital or jail, or be received by another authority. A physical departure is not enough to identify which occurred.
Read the destination with the release method. A district probation or parole office can support physical release under supervision. Another prison, a regional jail under VADOC authority, or a detaining agency means custody continues. Discharge describes completion of the custodial term as VADOC records it, but a suspended sentence or probation may remain. Parole carries Board conditions for a legally eligible sentence.
The strongest direct evidence is the signed release paper or facility event. The sentencing court supplies the controlling judgment, while a receiving agency settles whether an apparent release was a transfer.
Check Wise Unit Custody Status
The VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator covers people currently incarcerated or supervised by the state. It also includes certain people in local or regional jails under VADOC authority, institutional hospitals, and CCAP programs. It is not a universal archive for people who have completed custody and all supervision.
- Search with the first three letters of the first name plus full last name, or the seven-digit DOC ID.
- Use optional location, race, gender, or age filters only to distinguish likely matches.
- Compare the DOC ID and public descriptors before opening the detail record.
- Interpret a named institution as custody and a probation or parole district office as community supervision.
- Preserve the date searched because VADOC says its locator updates daily but may be inaccurate or outdated.
- Confirm the result with release documents, the facility event, and the sentencing court.
A blank result does not prove release. It can reflect complete discharge, a name mismatch, timing, or lack of current VADOC jurisdiction. No universal projected-date field is promised on the public record.
Wise Unit Records and Contact
The verified facility contact is the first route for current institutional questions and records routing. Formal requests may be handled through VADOC’s central office. Staff can restrict protected medical, security, victim, or personal content while supplying nonexempt, segregable fields.

Identify the person by full name and DOC ID. Ask for existing records showing the institution, release date and method, destination or detainer, receiving agency, transportation, supervision jurisdiction, reporting instructions, and order reference. A records office need not create a custom explanation. The sentencing court remains the source for the judgment, amended order, and sentence.

Wise Unit Release-Day Process
VADOC publishes unusually concrete release-day details that apply to Wise Correctional Unit. A person signs an Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, or Conditions of Parole as applicable, with a staff witness. Staff return personal property, prepare a property-envelope receipt where needed, and may return identity or educational documents held there. Release documents and restoration-of-rights information are also provided.
Records staff ask whether the person plans to use public transportation or approved pickup by family or friends. The business office can arrange bus transportation. Account funds and limited discharge medication are handled under the state process. These facts can help confirm a completed VADOC event, but they are not SWVRJA practices unless the regional authority separately says so.

Note: VADOC says discharge and parole releases occur by 11:59 p.m. on the date, weather permitting.
Wise Unit Release-Date Computation
Who computes a date depends on the sentence type and active time, not just the building. VADOC handles active Earned Sentence Credit sentences over twelve months and specified legacy calculations. A person can remain in a regional jail while VADOC computes a state-responsible sentence. Conversely, a shorter local sentence can remain with the local authority.
Credits depend on the offense, statutory version, classification, conduct, programs, discipline, jail credit, and court changes. Some serious offenses can earn no more than 4.5 days per 30 days served, which creates the shorthand of about 85 percent served. That is not a universal promise. Other eligible offenses may use different credit levels, and classification can change.

Wise Unit Parole Verification
Parole eligibility and release are separate. Virginia’s Parole Board publishes monthly completed decisions and uses verified terms including Grant and Not Grant. No public person-specific future interview calendar was found. Public meeting dates and agendas are not a pending-case lookup.
A grant can still be followed by plan approval, condition setting, detainer review, or rescission. Use the Board report to establish the decision. Use the VADOC event and signed conditions to establish physical release. The sentencing court supplies the sentence, and the locator can show current supervision after prison departure.

Supervision follows the approved residence and plan. It does not default to the Norton district merely because Wise Correctional Unit is in the county.
Wise Unit County-State Boundary
Wise County’s correctional map has an uncommon split. Red Onion, Wallens Ridge, and Wise Correctional Unit are VADOC institutions inside the county. The adult local-jail resource identified for Wise County is SWVRJA Duffield across the county line in Scott County. That makes “Wise County inmate” an uncertain phrase until the holding system is known.
A Wise County arrestee ordinarily follows SWVRJA and the Wise or Norton court. A state prisoner assigned to Wise Correctional Unit may have a sentencing case anywhere in Virginia. The SWVRJA roster cannot confirm a VADOC release, and a VADOC result cannot substitute for a regional-jail booking event.

Wise Unit ICE Detainer Releases
An ICE detainer can lead to transfer rather than community release. Match the VADOC destination or receiving-agency field to ICE’s own system. No dedicated ICE detention center was identified in Wise County, so the receiving location may be elsewhere.
ICE’s ODLS includes people currently detained and people released from ICE custody within the last 60 days. Older released records are removed from the public extract. After that window, a no-result proves little about the older event. Use ICE records, the immigration case, counsel, or another authorized channel.
The same scope rule applies to federal custody. A BOP result describes federal prison status only. “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” does not exclude state custody, a jail, ICE, parole, or federal supervised release.
Weigh Wise Unit Release Proof
Rank each source by its purpose. A signed release order or facility event is strongest for physical departure and time. A court order is strongest for legal authority but may precede final processing. A receiving-agency record is strongest for continued custody after transfer. A current locator is strongest only for what VADOC displays when searched.
Preserve the DOC ID, source, retrieval time, institution, exact status language, event time, and destination. When the destination is blank, state that the person left the displayed custody system and the destination remains unverified. If records conflict, contact both custodians and explain the difference.
