Virginia Jail VINE is the local-jail custody and notification service reached through VINELink. SWVRJA links to it from the Authority’s official site, making it a relevant channel for a person held in the regional system on a Wise County or Norton matter. It is designed for a specific person check and optional notice registration. It is not a complete list of everyone once held in Wise County.
Coverage follows the reporting agency. A Wise County arrest may lead to custody at SWVRJA Duffield, but the Authority can house or move people among Duffield, Haysi, Abingdon, and Tazewell. Match the agency and available identifiers rather than assuming the closest building. Highlands Juvenile Detention Center is subject to confidential juvenile rules and must not be treated as an adult public-search source.

Search Wise County Inmates on VINELink
Use exact identifying details and compare every available descriptor. Names can collide, and a spelling difference can hide a match. The goal is not just to find a similar name. It is to connect the right person with the right participating agency and custody event.
- Open Virginia in VINELink and choose the custody or offender search offered by the live interface.
- Enter the person’s full name or known identifier. Try a known alias or spelling variant if the first search is blank.
- Compare agency, facility, identifier, and the available personal descriptors across possible matches.
- Open the matching record and read the custody status, facility information, and last-updated or event language.
- If the record reports release or another change, preserve the displayed date and time, then call SWVRJA to confirm the destination.
Do not declare release from a no-result. The cause could be an entry mismatch, agency scope, timing, transfer, or another data limit. The full Wise County released-inmate search adds the court docket and focused records request when VINELink alone cannot settle the question.
Note: Save the agency name and retrieval time with the result because custody data can change after a transfer or correction.
Wise County VINELink Result Fields
The live interface controls the exact field labels, and those labels can change. Read what the Virginia result actually displays rather than assuming a scheduled date or destination will be present. A custody status is a reporting-agency event. It is not the criminal court’s final disposition and does not replace the jail’s underlying release record.

If the result says released, record its exact wording and event time. Then ask SWVRJA whether the booking closed and whether the destination was the community, VADOC, another jail, or a detaining agency. A transfer is not freedom from custody. A court docket may explain the authority, but the jail event is stronger evidence of the actual physical departure.
Register Wise County Release Notifications
Registration begins only after the correct record has been matched. Choose a notification channel currently offered on that record. Virginia materials support telephone notification with a PIN confirmation. Email or text may use a confirmation link or code shown by the live interface, but they should not be described as PIN-based unless that screen says so.
- Open the matched person’s record and select the notification-registration control.
- Choose an offered channel, such as telephone, email, or text, based on the live choices.
- Enter the requested contact information carefully. Do not place another person’s details in a public screenshot.
- For telephone calls, create the requested PIN and keep it private. Enter it when the alert calls to confirm receipt.
- For email or text, complete the confirmation link or code that the interface sends, if required.
- Save the registration confirmation and SWVRJA telephone number as a backup source.
Official Virginia materials state that calls may repeat until the PIN is entered or the stated 24-hour attempt period ends. A forgotten phone PIN can be reset through 1-800-467-4943. Registration is offered without a VINE user fee, though ordinary carrier charges can still apply.
Confirm Wise County Release Alerts
An alert means that the participating agency supplied a custody event to VINE. It does not decide the case, guarantee a current location, or explain every downstream hold. Treat it as a prompt to verify, especially when the event may involve transfer from SWVRJA to VADOC, another jail, federal custody, or ICE.

VINE itself warns against relying on notification as the sole means of protection. Keep agency contact information and use emergency services when there is an immediate threat. For ordinary record verification, preserve the alert’s event wording and ask the reporting jail to explain its release code and destination.
Wise County VINE-to-NAAVI Handoff
Wise County has an important notification boundary. SWVRJA participates in the local Virginia Jail VINE path. VADOC uses NAAVI for its own eligible victim-notification service and expressly states that it is not connected to local-jail VINE. Registration does not automatically follow a person from the regional jail into state custody.
A move from Duffield into VADOC can therefore end one notification context without being a community release. If the receiving record shows Red Onion State Prison, Wallens Ridge State Prison, Wise Correctional Unit, or another VADOC site, the person remains incarcerated. An eligible user may need a separate state registration through the VADOC process.

Wise County State-Custody Checks
VADOC’s Inmate and Supervisee Locator covers people currently in state custody or supervision. Search with the first three letters of the first name and full last name, or a seven-digit DOC ID. Optional filters can include location, race, gender, and age range. VADOC says its data updates daily but may be inaccurate or out of date.
Interpret the result by location. A named prison or a local or regional jail under VADOC authority still means custody. A probation or parole district office points to community supervision, not incarceration in that office. A person can remain searchable after physical prison release because legal supervision continues. Someone who completes both custody and supervision may no longer appear, so the locator is not a permanent archive of all discharges.
VADOC notifications can cover state events such as transfer, advance release, release date, escape, recapture, parole interview, and parole decision for eligible registrants. Those events should not be promised through the open VINELink jail route.
The difference is especially important in Wise County because three state facilities sit inside the county while the main adult regional-jail facility identified for local cases stands at Duffield in neighboring Scott County. “Inmate in Wise County” can describe a state prisoner housed at Red Onion, Wallens Ridge, or Wise Correctional Unit. “Person arrested in Wise County” often leads instead to SWVRJA and the local court. Identify the custodial system before registering. A VADOC notification-of-release letter and signed conditions are state records, while an SWVRJA movement or release event belongs to the regional-jail path.
Wise County VINELink Limits
VINELink does not replace federal or immigration tools. A sentenced federal prisoner belongs in the Bureau of Prisons locator. A federal pretrial person may remain under the U.S. Marshals Service without a public historical release database. ICE uses its own detainee locator, and a transfer to ICE on a detainer is continued custody rather than community release.
Other limits are local. A name may fail because of spelling, identifiers, timing, reporting scope, or a move between systems. A release alert may not explain the legal order or destination. The SWVRJA event and court record supply those missing facts. If the destination field is absent, the careful wording is that the person left the displayed custody system and the destination is unverified.
