Identify the Red Onion Record
Before any search, identify whether the question concerns current custody, a projected date, a completed release, or supervision. Those facts come from different records. Using the right question prevents a current locator result from being treated as a final discharge certificate and prevents a Board decision from being treated as the physical release event.
Red Onion Sentence-Credit Records
Virginia earned sentence credits are not a single percentage for all prisoners. Eligibility depends on the offense and statutory version. For specified serious offenses, a maximum of 4.5 credit days per 30 days served produces the shorthand of roughly 85 percent served. Other eligible offenses can use different levels. Conduct, programs, disciplinary events, jail credit, amended orders, and classification changes can move a projected date.
Legacy Good Conduct Allowance may apply to older offenses, while parole eligibility is a separate legal issue. Neither a credit estimate nor first eligibility proves the date Red Onion will complete a physical release. Direct a computation concern to VADOC and an incorrect controlling order to the sentencing court.
Note: The offense date and current statute matter, so one credit rate cannot be applied to every Red Onion sentence.
Red Onion Prison Release Paths
Red Onion State Prison is a VADOC institution in Pound. It is not the county or regional jail for a Wise County arrest. A sentenced person may leave through discharge, parole, transfer to another VADOC institution, movement to a hospital or jail, or delivery to another authority on a detainer. Discharge means VADOC records the custodial sentence as satisfied, though probation or a suspended term can remain. Parole means physical release under conditions for a legally eligible sentence. Transfer means incarceration continues.
The destination resolves the difference. A probation or parole district office in a current VADOC result supports physical departure from prison under community supervision. Another prison or a jail under VADOC authority remains custody. Signed release documents and VADOC’s event record are stronger proof of the actual exit than a blank search result. The sentencing court supplies the judgment and order behind the event.
Confirm Red Onion Prison Release
The VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator covers people currently in state custody or current community supervision. It is updated daily, with a warning that data may be inaccurate or outdated. It is not described as a permanent archive of every fully discharged person.
- Search with the first three letters of the first name and full last name, or use the seven-digit DOC ID.
- Compare the DOC ID and public descriptors. Optional filters include location, race, gender, and age range.
- Read the location in context. Red Onion or another institution means custody; a district office can mean community supervision.
- Obtain the signed Order of Release or applicable probation or parole conditions and note the witness and date.
- Check the sentencing court for the judgment, amended orders, jail credit, and supervision terms.
- Ask VADOC records for the release event and destination when the public result does not settle the question.
No universal projected-release field is promised on the public locator. If no date appears, use VADOC Time Computation and the Court & Legal correspondence route rather than guessing.
Red Onion Records and Contact
The facility’s verified public contact gives the correct starting point for present custody and facility routing. Staff may direct formal record requests to a central VADOC office, and protected medical, security, victim, or personal details can be withheld or redacted.

Ask for an existing release or movement record, not answers that require a new document. Useful fields include full name, DOC ID, institution, event date and method, community or detainer destination, receiving agency, transportation, supervision jurisdiction, reporting information, and the authority for release. For the judgment or sentencing order, contact the sentencing court rather than the prison.

Red Onion Release Documents
VADOC states that a person signs an Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, or Conditions of Parole as applicable, with a staff witness. Those papers are direct evidence of the event and its legal conditions. VADOC also describes return of personal property, a property-envelope receipt where applicable, release funds, transportation planning, and limited medication steps. These are state practices and must not be attributed to SWVRJA.

VADOC says discharge and parole releases occur by 11:59 p.m. on the release date, weather permitting. That is a state-prison deadline, not an exact appointment and not an SWVRJA rule. Preserve the actual event time when available.
Red Onion Dates and Parole
Projected dates depend on the responsible timekeeper, sentence type, active time, credit class, conduct, court changes, and detainers. VADOC handles specified state-responsible computations, including active Earned Sentence Credit sentences over twelve months. The public locator landing page does not document a universal projected-date label. A missing public date does not mean no internal computation exists.
Parole eligibility is also not release. Virginia’s Parole Board publishes monthly completed decisions, including Grant and Not Grant terminology, but no public person-specific future-interview calendar was verified. A grant may be followed by condition setting, detainer review, or rescission before departure. The Board answers suitability; VADOC’s event and signed papers answer physical release.

Red Onion’s Wise County Distinction
Wise County has three VADOC facilities but relies on SWVRJA Duffield, across the county line in Scott County, for its identified adult local-jail service. This creates two meanings that should never be merged. A person arrested on a Wise County case usually follows the regional-jail and local-court path. A prisoner housed at Red Onion may have been sentenced anywhere in Virginia and follows the VADOC and sentencing-court path.
The holding agency controls the release record. SWVRJA’s current-only roster cannot confirm a departure from Red Onion. Likewise, Red Onion staff do not own a regional-jail booking record just because both systems serve people connected to Wise County. Identify the DOC ID, sentencing locality, institution, and destination before selecting a records office.
After a community release, supervision follows the approved plan and residence. It does not automatically go to VADOC District 18 merely because Red Onion stands in Wise County.
Red Onion Detainers and ICE
A detainer can turn a departure from Red Onion into continued custody under another authority. The VADOC release record should identify the destination or receiving agency when that field is available. If ICE receives the person, use ICE’s own locator and authorized channels. Do not equate removal from the VADOC locator with return to the community.
ICE’s public ODLS includes people currently detained or released from ICE custody within the last 60 days. Older released entries are removed from the public extract. Thus an older no-result is a retention limit, not proof that detention or transfer never occurred. After that window, use ICE records, the immigration case, counsel, or another authorized source.
No dedicated ICE detention center was identified in Wise County. An immigration handoff may occur elsewhere. A federal or immigration record answers only that system’s custody question, so match it to VADOC’s destination field.
Evaluate Red Onion Release Evidence
Rank evidence by the fact it proves. A signed release order or facility event is strongest for physical departure and time. A sentencing-court order is strongest for legal authority but may precede processing. A receiving-agency record is strongest when the disputed event was a transfer. A current locator is strongest only for what VADOC presently displays.
Record the source, retrieval time, DOC ID, institution, exact status wording, event time, and destination. When the destination is blank, say the person left the displayed custody system and the destination is unverified. If sources conflict, contact VADOC and the court rather than choosing one silently.
